"HOW I GOT SAVED"-Gbemie.O

I will be starting this column "HOW I GOT SAVED" with my own story...This column is going to be about sharing salvation stories of different people from different walks of life. The point is to show to everyone reading the amazing power of our Savior to deliver from any and every thing.

I was born into a Christian home...
, I grew up listening to, reading and watching Bible stories , in the midst of all that I can’t say I remember a time when I took the conscious step to give my life to Christ because it was like I was born into it, it was the only way I kinda knew, well until I got to high school, the two high schools I attended were Christian schools, surprisingly that was when my rebellion stage began. At home I was the good girl except for the periods when I got really rude to my mom and the real me showed.

My rebellious stage followed me into university, where I was still a part-time good girl, as I always told myself that I was not as wild as “these other girls” that were sleeping around and doing stuff lol, but I definitely had my vices, I got involved with the wrong crowd, got myself a boyfriend lol and just began living my life for me, this didn’t take away my Bible knowledge, or my ability to quote scripture.

I even joined the ushering unit in my school chapel, because I felt I needed to be closer to God and maybe joining it would make me start coming to church regularly and which other department would allow me wear my fine clothes and show it off lol so in the day I was “usher gbemi” but in the night usher gbemie's skirt would be shorter as she had to look hot for the person she called her boyfriend. I totally ignored the fact that God wanted my heart more than my actions.

Sometime in the beginning of 2013, things were terrible for me, emotionally I was a wreck and my academics were kinda going down the drain, I just knew I wanted something more out of the life I was living and knew I could only find this fulfilment in God, I began this cycle of tweeting Christian stuff, posting Christian display pictures, even tried listening to a few Christian songs, but naah it didn’t flow and it wasn’t just it, I kept falling into the sins I said I wouldn’t fall into, having the thoughts I said I wasn’t going to have. I even started trying to read my Bible and attend all these fire fire prayer meetings, you see I was just wasting my time doing hard work in vain because the truth is we are not saved by our actions or works, salvation is a pure function of GRACE.

I guess God saw all my efforts and decided to set me up as I like to call it, it was my ultimate set up. We (my family) were at our churches’ monthly vigil, and we had rented a chalet to rest in before and after the program, when it was time for the program, my parents and sisters were just doing like snails, I was ready, and they were still dressing, using powder, doing this and that.

I think God decided to make them extra slow and make me extra impatient that night because, I just vexed and went for the program leaving them behind (which was totally unlike me), this lead to us sitting separately, I do not think if I had sat with my family what happened to me that night would have happened. I honestly do not think I paid attention during the service because I don’t remember a thing that was said that night, but I know that when it was time for the altar call( a thing that I had become immune to lol, when you grow up in church, altar calls are something you become used to hearing and my heart of stone just never budged), I couldn’t remain on my seat, It was like a force (which I now know is the holy spirit) was pushing me to go out for the altar call something kept telling me gbemi this is it, you have to go now, I struggled with it and told myself, abeg I can pray in my room my dad is a pastor blabla, but this thing wouldn’t let me be.

I just agreed finally with it in my spirit that it was time for me to stop the struggle and this was going to be the beginning of a new me, and I began to run as fast as my legs could carry me to the altar, when I got there, I can’t say I remember the prayer I prayed, but I just knew I was coming out to give my life back to the one who gave it to me.

That day was the first Friday of the month of September 2013, and that was the day I gave my life to Christ, and decided never to go back. Reading the Bible became easier for me, talking to God in prayer became easier, there were times when the devil tried to make me feel like I was still the old me, as it didn’t help matters that many of the people around me still looked at me or related to me based on who they knew, but thank God for the holy spirit that constantly assured me of my salvation as even the Bible says the spirit bears witness to us in our spirit that we are God’s children.

It is assuring to know that God says he will never leave me or forsake me and he really has been true to his words, by the way all the struggles I mentioned earlier that I was going through, ceased and was replaced with amazing peace, and I can confidently say there really is no better buddy than Jesus.

If you want to share your salvation experience to bless someone, you can e-mail me and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE, and share with a friend and even an enemy, to bless them.
